Everyone knows that exercise is important but not everyone fully understands why exercise is important. Weight loss isn’t the only benefit you receive from exercising regularly, but it’s the one we hear about most often. Adding physical activity to your routine can also go a long way toward preventing disease, improving cardiovascular health and mobility, and even increasing overall life expectancy. It doesn’t have to be strenuous, and it doesn’t have to be difficult. With improvements and advancements in home fitness equipment, you can even do it in the comfort of your own home! If you’re still hesitant, it might help to understand the different ways exercise impacts your body.

The heart is a muscle and needs to be strengthened just like any other. Aerobic and anaerobic exercise strengthen your heart and increase its endurance. The more efficiently your heart works, the better it can handle stress. Strengthening your heart can significantly decrease your risk of heart disease or failure, which has been the leading cause of death in the US for years.

Exercise improves cholesterol levels, which increases blood circulation and limits clogging in veins and arteries. Routine physical activity reduces the risk of stroke, and also actively combats insulin resistance and type II diabetes, the rate of which has increased alarmingly – 62% since 1990.

A lot of people have sedentary jobs that require them to sit at a desk slouched over a computer for a good chunk of the day. The lack of daily movement combined with poor posture can cause aches and pains in the back, shoulders, and neck. Some people slouch so long that it actually becomes difficult to keep their back straight. Strengthening the muscles in the core and back can help prevent muscle strains in those common problem areas.

Weight-bearing exercise, like walking, jogging, weight lifting, etc., helps strengthen your bones as well. Stronger bones provide more stability and balance in addition to decreasing the risk of injury from simple daily tasks. Routine exercise can even prevent osteoporosis or bone density loss caused by old age or menopause.

Did you know that, in addition to making you healthier, exercise is also proven to make you happier? During physical activity, the brain releases endorphins, the chemical that makes you happy. Endorphins improve and stabilize mood. Regular exercise also decreases the production of cortisol and adrenaline, which cause stress and anxiety, while increasing serotonin production. Too little serotonin in your system can lead to depression.

Working out can be a natural remedy for those suffering from depression or anxiety. It creates a happy, positive environment in the brain. Completing workouts also builds confidence in yourself and your abilities. In addition, the physical changes that occur with exercise make you feel healthier, which can also help improve how you see and feel about yourself.

Everyone should strive for at least an hour of exercise per day, whether consecutively or nonconsecutively. However, any amount of exercise is beneficial. Whether you hit the gym, use home fitness equipment, walk the dog, clean the house, or work in the garden, something is always better than nothing. It’s been proven that regular daily exercise combined with a healthy diet leads to weight loss and improved overall health.

It’s never too early to start. According to the CDC, obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. It’s also never too late to start. One study showed that sedentary women age 65 years or older who began walking a mile a day reduced rates of death from all causes by 50%. By ensuring that you move your body every day, you can live a happier, healthier, and longer life.
